STCU can protect your privacy, but we can’t control public records or junk mail solicitors.
When you get an STCU home loan or home equity loan, a legal deed is filed at the courthouse to document the lien on your property. This is normal practice for real estate transactions.
A copy of the deed, however, becomes public property - and a goldmine for junk mail solicitors. Public records provide basic information that junk mailers use to sell stuff:
• Your name
• Your address
• Proof of the loan
• A legal property description
• The name of your lender
With that information, solicitors pump out millions of letters and envelopes each year, offering everything from life insurance to pricy mortgage-payment programs.
If you receive a letter that looks like it’s from STCU, check it closely. If it’s a sales pitch from an unknown company, shred it. They got your name from the public record - not from us!
