STCU helps four lucky teachers

Classroom grants to fund what school districts can't

[September 26, 2011]

Last year, as school district budgets continued to shrink, the typical U.S. teacher spent more than $350 out of his or her own pocket to equip public-school classrooms, according to a 2010 survey by the National School Supply and Equipment Association. Teachers say there just isn't enough money for everything from arts supplies to software, let alone the granola bars that some keep handy for students who arrive hungry.

Winners of the STCU Teacher's Sweepstake grants

Two teachers from Idaho and two from Washington were each presented October 4 with STCU teacher grants. Winners of the $500 grants were:

  • Beth Brubaker at Lakeland Junior High.
  • Kyle Smith at Northwood Middle School.
  • Lois Musser at Trent Elementary.
  • Elaine Moreen at Skyway Elementary.

STCU can't help them all. But as a not-for-profit organization founded by educators, we're honoring our roots by awarding four $500 classroom grants this fall to local certified teachers selected by drawing. The money can be spent on anything the teacher believes will enhance students' classroom experience, whether a basic need or something special.

Each year, STCU participates in back-to-school events for educators in Eastern Washington and North Idaho. This year, we attended kickoff events at 25 districts in our service area, providing refreshments and door prizes, while offering certified teachers the opportunity to enter our drawings for the four grants.

True, STCU is no longer just for teachers. But we remain dedicated to primary, secondary and higher education, through efforts like our classroom grants drawings and our support for academic programs and scholarships. Because we believe that raising well-educated kids is everybodys responsibility.
