Getting to know Tom Johnson
A few facts about our new CEO
[December 31, 2010]
As of New Years Day, STCU has a new president/CEO, only the third time that’s happened in our 76-year history. Yeah, it’s a pretty big deal.
So, who is this guy, Tom Johnson, and what does he know about running a credit union? Here are ten things you should know:
- He’s not new.
Tom has been associated with the credit union, first as a board member and then as a vice president, since 1994. That means he’s been involved in every major decision for 17 years, so there's no reason to expect any major changes as a result of this transition.
- He’s a bean counter.
He doesn’t wear a green eyeshade, but Tom is a Certified Public Accountant. He has a bachelor’s degree in business and industrial administration from the University of Illinois (home of the Fighting Illini) and an MBA from Clarkson University in New York.
- He’s a lifelong Cubs fan.
That means he’s an optimist. There’s always next year – right, Tom?
- He’s dedicated to education.
Tom’s a former vice president of Whitworth University. His wife, Ruth Ann, taught high-school English and supervises student teachers for the Whitworth School of Education. You think he’s going to forget our roots?
- He’s a family man.
Tom and Ruth Ann have three sons and two daughters-in-law. Check out the pictures of his new granddaughter on his desk.
- He roots for the Eagles and the Zags.
Yes, it’s a job requirement. But Tom would do it anyway.
- He wears a tie.
Sure, Tom can dress down. But in a world that’s gone casual, he looks commanding in a suit.
- He’s 100% Swedish.
Though he's sworn off lutfisk, Tom still eats rice pudding.
- He plays golf.
Tom claims his handicap is unimpressive. But ask him about the hole-in-one he shot a few years back.
- He’s an STCU member.
Just like you.
